Through school, the Olathe Police Department released the following information. It is a good follow-up from the Internet Safety presentation by the Johnson County Sheriff's Dept at the March 5 Troop meeting. "I wanted to pass along information on Internet sites developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to teach children about being safe on-line. There are actually several sites. The first, www.NetSmartz.org , has information for Parents, Educators, Law Enforcement, Teens, and Kids. It even has a Spanish option. There's a lot of information here to include chat abbreviations, info on social networking sites, age appropriate teaching resources for all ages of children, etc. The second is only for kids, www.NetSmartzkids.org . It has age specific games, activities, etc all designed to help teach kids Internet safety. The third is geared toward teenage girl's safety on social networking sites: www.2smrt4u.com . More child safety information and resources can also be found at NCMEC's website of; www.missingkids.com. These sites are good resources for us to refer parents too, and to use with our own children. I have also attached a flyer prepared by the NCMEC on Preventing the Sexual Exploitation of Children . This scanned copy is difficult to read on a computer monitor because of it's gray background but it prints out clearly if it's something you want." |
